It all started with the idea

I was born 1982 in Siegburg und I now live and work in Bonn. The vision for a new standard in portable turntables has been on my mind for years: even my application for the University of Design Schwäbisch-Gmünd had first sketches of the Coturn. After stopovers in Brazil and Berlin, I’m now back in the Rhineland, where the Coturn is being produced, too. Every bit handcrafted, every bit sustainable.

The vision

no bigger than a vinyl cover

Hi! So glad you came.
My name is Benjamin Großjohann and I am the inventor of the Coturn (Compact Turntable).
As a longtime pro BMX rider, trained industrial designer, and lifelong music enthusiast, I’ve created the CT-1 as a product that encapsulates all of my passions:

innovative design, an eye for detail, and perfect sound. I aimed for a high-quality product with subcultural flair – by collectors, for collectors. But also just for every music lover who values a beautiful product made of real metal, and who wants to listen to their vinyl everywhere, and anytime.

Inspiration

Sketches, prototypes and throwbacks

Benjamin could have designed the Coturn using 3D software, but he wanted to be able to hold it in his hands. See how he looks when he is in different places. See how it fares on the go. This is something completely different than a 3D modeled object on the screen

  • assembly

The team has set up an area on the first floor for assembling and storing the player - a special (PRODUCTION LINE) workbench with everything designed for the small components of the Coturn. All custom-made products, for example the screw box from the 3D printer.

  • precision

For example, the team needs a custom-made jig to clamp the tonearm. "You just need both hands when you assemble it, otherwise nothing will work"

  • Technology

“A turntable is one of the most complicated things you can build. Because everything comes together here: electronics, mechanics and design – all these elements have to mesh,” he explains. "Of course, I already have some ideas and experience, but actually I still lacked a degree in mechanical engineering."

The result

A portable turntable no bigger than a vinyl cover of exceptional quality. Great sound to go, elegant design and high-quality materials.
